My Capsule(ish) Wardrobe

Let me start by saying this: I am most certainly not a minimalist. I own more than 10 books, own more than 10 kitchen utensils, and use more than 5 pencils.

I wish I could be one of those cool people who live in a 500-square-foot, perfectly decorated apartment, have no clutter, and own, like, 5 items of clothing. It sounds simple and easy.

But alas - I’m a mom with a toddler, one who likes to keep a random collection of leaves (and pretty much anything else she discovers outside).

But even if I can’t be a tried and true minimalist, I CAN find freedom in having less. For me, it’s not about owning nearly zero, it’s about simplifying and streamlining.

So today, I want to give you a sneak peek into how you can set up and maintain a simplified wardrobe that you will love. And real talk? Do I have things in my closet I have not worn in 6 months? Probably. But those items are relatively few. For the most part, I am hanging onto items that actually fit, that I actually wear, and that I really love. I am aiming for ease so I don’t spend my precious brain space stressing about what to wear.

So here are my simple tips for keeping a wardrobe that doesn't make your brain hurt:

1. Toss the pre-pregnancy sizes

I recently became 100% ok buying the next bigger size (a size I pretty much never wore before) and instead of feeling crappy about this choice, my clothes actually fit better and make me look slimmer! Just literally toss those pre-pregnancy clothes and never look back, mama. I PROMISE you will find so much freedom here. The weight and stress of seeing those clothes staring at you day after day is not healthy. Embrace that #mombod and size up!

2. Less is more

A few pair of great fitting pants, a couple pair of versatile (and quality) shoes, just a few tanks, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweaters are probably all you ever wear. Take note of the things you continually wash and wear (and love) and get rid of most everything else.

3. Go for a color palate

For me, I mostly buy neutrals (and some magenta pink, ‘cause it’s my favorite color), and then I let my jewelry or lipstick be the standout pop of color. This way I can reuse a lot of the same items without anyone knowing!! Also, neutral applies to shoes as well. One great pair of black and another of brown will take you far.

4. Only keep things you would pay full price for today

This philosophy has changed not just my closet but my entire life! Unless I would be willing to walk into a store and pay the full retail value for an item, most likely it’s not something I really want. This will help you steer clear of buying or keeping things because they were “a good deal.”

5. Think Quality over quantity

Often times when you buy a quality version of an item you love, it lasts 10 times longer than the cheap version. It might be an investment up front, but having a good quality item keeps you from having to replace it every 6 months and actually saves you money on the back end.

No matter what your closet looks like right now, these 5 tips can help you curate a wardrobe that feels good to YOU.

It’s not about having a certain number of anything in particular, it’s just about feeling proud and happy about what you own so that you can get dressed with confidence and not stress about it. There are much better ways to spend your precious time and energy!

So over to you!!

Tell me which tip got you most excited to start on!
