How to untangle your mind using a “brain dump”
Ever feel like your brain is a in a big knot? Yeah, me too! Sometimes, it feels like my mind is a swirling tornado that’s unable to focus on one single thought at a time.
It is extremely hard to get anything done when your mind is in this state, let alone be a present, fun, and caring mom.
We live in a world full of demands.
Home
Work
Children
Hobbies
Exercise
Meal planning
There is a LOT.
No wonder we get overwhelmed!!
WHAT:
So today, I want to teach you a practice I love to use called the “brain dump” - super simple but very effective.
Basically, you get everything that is swirling around in your brain written down on paper. Then you choose what to focus on, what to let go of, and what to delegate.
In other words, substitute that list of thoughts you have been carrying in your head with a list on paper instead. You will be able to focus on one idea at a time (and by keeping the list, you can eliminate the worry that you might forget the other stuff).
It’s like physically dumping the contents of your purse onto the floor. Now you can clearly see the things that were once a jumbled mess. Now you can sort through it all and tidy up.
WHY:
It might sound kind of silly to create a paper list of all your to-do’s and anxieties. Maybe you think you can keep track of it all in your head. It’s what you’ve always done, right? But let me ask you this - is it working? Is this system helping you prioritize things that REALLY matter to you? Or is it just fueling that fight-or-flight, hair-on-fire. always-running-out-of-time feeling?
By taking a few minutes to write down everything that’s in your brain, you take the power back and reclaim your time and energy. Writing things down concretely helps you stop chasing after half-formed ideas and thoughts.
WHEN:
Do this anytime that overwhelmed feeling is creeping in.
You could also make this a weekly practice, if that is helpful to you.
HOW:
Just start writing! Think of tangible intentions - things you have been meaning to do, people you’ve been meaning to reach, appointments you’ve been meaning to make, anything that comes to mind.
Also think of the abstract, your theoretical wish list - things like planning a trip, addressing areas of your home you want to change, parties you want to host.
Just keep writing!!
THEN WHAT:
Walk away. Give it a breather. Let it sit. (Maybe go for a run or have a fresh cup of coffee.)
Organize categories (home, work, kids, projects, future ideas, errands, appointments, goals).
When you are ready, come back and identify the things you most need or want to tackle.
Cross off the things that really don’t matter.
Choose to delegate what you can. Can you hire or ask someone else to do this task? (Perhaps you have been wanting to do a deep clean of your home for the last six months - well, maybe it’s time to hire someone.)
Use your calendar to pencil in a few dates and times to work on specific projects. (For instance, if you need to get your tax documents in order, schedule a day or two next week and block it out on your calendar.)
Using the “brain dump” method can be handy for so much! It can help you clear the clutter inside your mind, create the space for what really matters, and identify the things that are your responsibility.
